Wolf opens Aussie account for Palace Pier
Wolf Gap delivered the first Australian victory for one-time Darley shuttler Palace Pier with a winning debut at Warwick Farm on Wednesday for trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman.
The two‑year‑old colt, carrying the Roll The Dice colours, settled near the rear in the 1100 metre maiden for jockey Nash Rawiller but swept past favourite Naadra, trained by Michael Freedman, to score a narrow win.
The pair finished more than three lengths ahead of third‑placed Lorax.
Freedman stable representative Scott Innes said the colt had impressed from the outset.
“His Canterbury trial was very good… he shows a lot at home, and very happy to get a result,” he said.
Rawiller echoed the sentiment, noting the colt’s professionalism. “He’s still learning, but he showed the will and determination to win. A great effort and definitely a horse on the way up.”
Purchased for $280,000 from Arrowfield Stud at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Wolf Gap is the fourth winner from Snitzel mare Bandol and a half‑brother to Blue Diamond Prelude placegetter Katsumi Orochi.
Palace Pier, a five‑time Group 1 winning sone of Kingman, has had only two Australian runners to date.
