$5 million boost to Northern Queensland Winter Racing Carnival

A prize money and bonus pool exceeding $5 million will underpin this year’s Northern Queensland Winter Racing Carnival, highlighted by a new $1 million incentive designed to lure the state’s best horses.

The inaugural Great Northern Crowns Bonus will see $500,000 awarded to any horse capable of winning all four major Cups across Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns.

A further $500,000 is on offer to any horse that can land the four feature sprints at the same venues, while a $250,000 bonus will be paid for winning three out of four staying or sprint races.

Northern regional representative Scott Riordan said the scale of the bonuses reinforced the carnival’s growing importance.

“This shows how seriously the industry is investing in Northern racing,” Riordan said. “It’s a huge opportunity for participants across Central and North Queensland, and it puts our clubs firmly in the spotlight during the winter months.”

The two‑month carnival begins at Rockhampton’s Callaghan Park on July 9 and culminates with the Cairns Cup meeting on August 29.

Leading northern trainer Stephen Massingham believes the bonus structure will influence stable planning.

“These incentives definitely make you think differently about where you place your horses,” Massingham said. “If you’ve got a horse that’s versatile and travelling well, the rewards are significant.”

Top jockeys are also expected to feature prominently throughout the series, including multiple Group 1 winner William Pike, who will ride at the Cairns Super Carnival.

More than $4 million in prize money and bonuses will be distributed across Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns, cementing the Northern Queensland Winter Racing Carnival as one of the state’s showcase racing events.
