Bleeding scare sidelines Pride stable star Ceolwulf
Four‑time Group 1 winner Ceolwulf has been spelled after suffering a second bleeding incident following his sixth‑place finish in the Verry Elleegant Stakes at Randwick.
The five‑year‑old gelding, trained by Joe Pride, was beaten almost six lengths behind the unbeaten mare Autumn Glow.
A post‑race veterinary check revealed blood in Ceolwulf’s right nostril and trachea.
Racing NSW stewards confirmed that Ceolwulf must complete a supervised 1000‑metre gallop under official observation before being cleared to return to competition.
Pride will prioritise the gelding’s health during an extended spell, rather than press on to the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in April.
It was a similar occurrence after Ceolwulf resumed in the Apollo Stakes and emerged from the race with blood in both nostrils.
Bleeding from both nostrils would normally incur an automatic three-month ban, but a veterinary scope cleared Ceolwulf of a pulmonary haemorrhage and blood in the lungs.
