Vale Pat Hyland
Champion jockey Pat Hyland has died aged 84.
Hyland won many of Australia’s best races as a jockey, including the Melbourne Cup aboard What A Nuisance, the Golden Slipper on Vain, the Caulfield Cup on Affinity and the Cox Plate aboard Star Affair.
He was also a Group 1-winning trainer, thanks to Saleous’ success in the 1995 VRC Oaks, a race he won also won as jockey.
The Port Fairy-born horseman was a winner of nearly 2400 races in the saddle over 30 years, he was also a member of the Australian Racing Hall Of Fame.
“Pat passed away peacefully today. He was surrounded by all of his kids & grandkids and with his beloved wife Maree by his side,” a statement from his family said.
“He was deeply loved to the end and will be sadly missed by us all.”
