Perfumist bolts clear in Tibbie Stakes, while Aethelwulf wins Newcastle Cup

Perfumist and Aethelwulf lived up to their favouritism in two of the three feature events at Newcastle on Friday, while Fully Lit capturted the Cameron Handicap.

Perfumist returned to racing in style, with the five-year-old comfortably accounting for her rivals in the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400 metres) for trainer Bjorn Baker.

The $3.60 favourite settled fifth under Rachel King after jumping from barrier six. King joined the leaders aboard Perfumist before asking the mare to extend inside the final 150 metres. She quickly opened a clear advantage, with Mareth finishing strongly into second and Polymnia taking third ahead of Infancy.

Perfumist, who races in the OTI Racing colours, has now won two straight, having closed her previous preparation with a victory.

The Matthew Smith-trained Aethelwulf made it four straight wins with an equally impressive victory in the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup.

Starting the $1.20 favourite, the son of Saxon Warrior took control of the race 1000 metres out and streeted away to defeat Steel Blaze by 2.5 lengths, with Bella Montagna back in third.

In the Cameron Handicap, Fully Lit bounced back to winning form, leading all the way to defeat I’mintowin, with the short-priced favourite Mr Miller in third.
