Well Written ruled out of Golden Eagle with temperature, set for New Zealand spell

Well Written will not run in the $10 million Golden Eagle at Randwick with her owners to assess her next targets once she recovers from a spiked temperature.

New Zealand Horse of the Year Well Written has been withdrawn from the $10 million Golden Eagle at Royal Randwick after spiking a temperature.

Racing journalist Michael Guerin reported on X that connections of the Stephen Marsh-trained four-year-old would not press on with her campaign. Once she is back to full health, the mare will return to New Zealand for a spell, and her owners will then assess her next targets.

The decision ends her Sydney campaign after one start. She ran sixth, beaten 3.5 lengths, in the Epsom Handicap at Randwick It was her first run in Australia and her first defeat after seven consecutive wins in New Zealand. She pulled up with the thumps after that race.

Well Written won all six of her starts at three. Those wins included the Group 1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas, the Karaka Millions 3YO and the $4 million NZB Kiwi. She resumed this season with a two-length win in the Group 1 Proisir Plate at Ellerslie on September 5, and was named Horse of the Year and Champion Three-Year-Old the following evening.
