Cornerstone Stud to disperse breeding stock as chapter closes

One of South Australia’s most respected commercial breeding operations, Cornerstone Stud, will bring its breeding chapter to a close with a complete bloodstock dispersal through Inglis Digital next week.

The sale will see the entirety of the stud’s commercial portfolio offered to the market, including broodmares, weanlings, young stock, racehorses and breeding interests, creating a rare opportunity for buyers to access bloodstock sourced and developed through years of careful investment and planning.

Since taking ownership of Cornerstone Stud in 2017, John Frankhuisen has overseen a significant evolution of the business.

The operation has transitioned from its traditional stallion-based model into a commercially focused broodmare enterprise, centred on proven female families designed to appeal to both domestic and international markets.

That approach has yielded notable results, most recently through the emergence of Gimcrack Stakes winner Shiki.

General Manager Sam Pritchard-Gordon said the dispersal represents the culmination of a deliberate and successful breeding strategy.

“The decision to conclude the breeding operation has not been taken lightly. However, by conducting a complete dispersal through Inglis Digital, buyers will have a genuine opportunity to access the quality bloodstock that Cornerstone Stud has assembled over the past three years,” he said.

The catalogue is expected to attract strong attention from breeders, pinhookers, traders and racing stables alike, presenting a diverse collection of stock from families that have been selected with commercial performance firmly in mind.

For Frankhuisen, the sale signals the end of a deeply rewarding journey.

“Cornerstone Stud has been an incredibly enjoyable and rewarding part of my life,” he said.

“I’m immensely proud of what we’ve built, the people I’ve had the privilege to work alongside, and the horses we’ve bred. While it’s time to close this chapter, I sincerely hope the mares and young stock go on to enjoy continued success for their new owners.”

Prospective purchasers will be able to inspect the stock prior to the sale, with the full Cornerstone Stud dispersal to be conducted via Inglis Digital from August 7. Buyers are encouraged to review the catalogue upon release and register ahead of the auction.
