NZTR opens 2027 Elite Jockey Programme intake, with trainers asked to step forward
New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has opened expressions of interest for the 2027 intake of its Elite Jockey Programme.
Aspiring apprentices have until November 30 to register, and trainers interested in supporting a new apprentice are being asked to come forward by the same date.
The early cut-off leaves time for probationary riding, assessments and development before apprentice licensing between March and July.
Under NZTR’s licensing policy, a Class C probationer must identify a Class A trainer who has agreed to engage them if licensed.
The probationer must then work full-time for that trainer or an approved facility and complete at least 30 satisfactory official trial rides before being licensed as an apprentice.
“Trainers play a vital role in an apprentice’s development. A supportive employer, regular riding opportunities and constructive feedback help young riders put their learning into practice and build good habits from the outset,” said Sam Fursdon, NZTR’s general manager of welfare and industry capability.
NZTR recommends riders wait until they are 15 before applying for a Slow Trackwork Rider licence.
The intake follows NZTR’s three-year partnership with the New Zealand Pony Clubs Association, which includes a new Thoroughbred Rider Scholarship.
