Geldings set for Arc introduction
The board of France Galop has overwhelmingly approved a proposal to allow geldings to compete in the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, a landmark move that could reshape Europe’s most valuable horse race if ratified by the European Pattern Committee.
The proposed change, first reported by Jour de Galop, would open the €5 million showpiece to geldings from 2027, ending one of the sport’s most notable restrictions.
The Arc is currently limited to colts, fillies and mares, making it one of the few major Group 1 races outside the Classics that excludes geldings.
In a statement, France Galop said the decision reflects its ambition to strengthen the race’s standing as the pinnacle of international Flat racing.
“This landmark decision marks a new step in France Galop’s ambition to establish the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as the undisputed global benchmark in Flat racing,” the organisation said. “By expanding the field of eligible runners, France Galop is pursuing a clear objective: to strengthen the sporting contest, increase the event’s appeal and make it an even more compelling spectacle.”
The move comes amid growing calls to allow top-class geldings to compete in the Arc, particularly with elite performers such as Calandagan.
The proposal will now be reviewed by the European Pattern Committee, which is expected to consider the change in the first quarter of 2027.
