Horse truck driver killed in Victorian road accident

A float driver and two racehorses were killed a road tragedy in Victoria’s south west on Monday.

The horse truck rolled onto its roof and went over an embankment on Slate Quarry Road near Meredith about 8am, police media said.

Emergency services attended the scene, about 46km north west of Geelong, but the 59-year-old driver could not be saved and died at the scene. Two thoroughbred racehorses from a prominent Victorian stable Patrick and Michelle Payne were also killed in the crash.

Six other horses, which were being transported by South West Horse Transport to the Camperdown jump outs, survived the crash, transport business owner Troy Bourke told Channel 7.

Work Safe have been notified of the incident and police were continuing their investigations in to the fatal accident on Monday afternoon.
