Kia Ora tops up mare strength ahead of 2026 season

Kia Ora Stud has moved to reinforce its breeding operation following the integration of its stallion interests with Vinery Stud, underpinning its program with investment in high-quality mares and fillies during the 2026 sales season.

The Hunter Valley nursery purchased eight fillies, three colts and 10 mares across major auctions, deepening a broodmare band designed to maximise opportunities for Golden Slipper winner Farnan and emerging Group 1-producing freshman sire Tropicus.

“We know the standard we want to maintain at Kia Ora and that drives every decision we make,” said Bloodstock and Breeding Manager Shane Wright. “Our philosophy is sourcing quality mares from proven families that give us every opportunity to breed top-class racehorses.”

Among the headline additions was Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes winner Sassy Boom, secured for $575,000.

“She’s a high-quality mare with plenty of depth to her page… we felt she was a great fit for both Farnan and the farm,” Wright said. Stakes-winning filly Gala Queen ($470,000) also joined the roster, with Wright noting her “very current and commercial family.”

Kia Ora also targeted international depth, adding dual stakes winner Ippodamia’s Girl and Heaven Forbid.

“We’ve had great success with mares carrying the USA suffix,” Wright said, referencing past Group 1 results.

More than 30 mares are expected to visit both Farnan and Tropicus this spring. “We’ve been deliberate with our selections… supporting our stallions with quality mares is critical,” Wright said.
