LNJ Foxwoods co-founder Larry Roth dies aged 75
Roth’s family raced Kentucky Derby winner Country House and champion Covfefe, bred 27 black-type performers and established a fund to help horses in emergencies.
Laurence “Larry” Roth, who co-founded LNJ Foxwoods and co-owned Kentucky Derby winner Country House, died on September 27 aged 75.
Roth built the US racing and breeding operation with his wife, Nanci, and daughter, Jaime. The family entered Thoroughbred ownership in 2012 and raced 49 black-type winners, including 23 graded stakes winners.
In Australia, LNJ Foxwoods raced Lighthouse, who won the 2022 Group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.
Country House was awarded the 2019 Kentucky Derby after Maximum Security was disqualified. LNJ Foxwoods owned him with Maury Shields and Shields’ nephew, Guinness McFadden Jr.
Covfefe captured the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, earning champion female sprinter honours and the title of champion three-year-old filly. The stable also raced Grade 1 winners Olympiad, Constellation and Nickname. United, the stable’s highest-earning horse, won seven graded stakes and finished second in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Turf.
The Roths bred 27 black-type performers, including graded or Group winners Land Legend, Ancient Wisdom, Luck and Earhart.
