Locals land Cup trifecta as Asva takes Launceston feature
Asva led home an upset local trifecta in the Group 3 Launceston Cup, providing jockey Jett Stanley and trainer Glenn Stevenson with career highlights.
Asva had won the Devonport Cup in January, but was well-beaten in the Hobart Cup in the lead-in to Wednesday’s feature and started at odds of $31.
But after travelling three deep with cover, the race panned out perfectly for the six-year-old son of Capitalist, who took control of the race early in the straight, sweeping past the leaders and shooting clear.
He never really looked like being beaten from that point. Zulu Angel ($201) and Distrustful Award ($10) closed the gap late to complete a Tassie-trained trifecta.
Asva has now won eight of his 39 starts and over $500,000 for his connections. Stevenson, based at Wesley Vale, won three races on the feature day.
