NT-licensed bookies take 1.8 billion bets a year
The Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission’s annual report revealed that NT-licensed bookmakers had over 10 million customers combined and accepted 1.8 billion bets across 2024/25.
In the first annual report since 1993, a new requirement under the act introduced by Labor last year, the NTWRC revealed total turnover of the territory’s bookmakers was $42.4 billion, with the NT government receiving $18.8 million in tax revenue.
It also disclosed the NTRWC received 562 customer complaints in 2024/25, with 478 of those finalised, while there were 118 “ongoing complaints”.
The regulator of most wagering within Australia disciplined bookmakers on 19 occasions and issued fines totalling $300,000.
The Commission also collected $900,000 in licensing revenue across the financial year.
“In our inaugural year, the Commission assumed regulatory oversight of online sports wagering, betting exchanges, and on-course wagering, taking over from the former Northern Territory Racing Commission,” the report read.
“Our approach combines proactive monitoring with responsive enforcement, reflecting a commitment to both compliance and industry development, while maintaining integrity, fairness and consumer protection across the sector.”
The function of the previous NTRC and the new Commission came under the microscope in a recent Four Corners episode.
