Nandina delivers on pedigree in Warwick Farm win
Grey filly Nandina has emulated her high-profile dam in making a winning debut.
A daughter of the prolific stakes-winning Dubawi mare Catkins, Nandina produced a well-timed run under Kerrin McEvoy to score at Warwick Farm.
Catkins was also a winner at her first start, saluting at Kembla Grange in January 2012 in an overall record of 16 victories from 38 starts and more than $2 million in earnings.
She saluted 12 times in black-type company up to Group 2 level and her Group 1 record included successive placings in the 2013 Myer Classic at Flemington.
Raced by the Inghams and, like Nandina, trained by Chris Waller, Catkins was also placed in the Coolmore Classic, Canterbury Stakes and Queen of the Turf Stakes.
A three-year-old by So You Think, Nandina is Catkins’ fifth foal and she came from midfield to edge out the odds-on favourite Manukau over 1200m.
“She’s got big shoes to fill but she’s on her way,” Waller said.
