Trainer Stephen Meyer dies after Scone Cup day incident
Tamworth-based trainer Stephen Meyer has died after being kicked by a horse at Scone on Friday.

New South Wales racing is mourning the death of Tamworth-based trainer Stephen Meyer after an incident during Friday’s Scone Cup meeting.
The 71-year-old was reportedly kicked by a horse during Friday’s first day of the two-day feature Scone meeting and subsequently died.
Meyer’s only horse was Danza In The Dark, who competed in the final race on the Scone card, shortly after the incident involving his trainer.
Racing NSW confirmed Meyer’s sudden passing on Saturday morning.
“A dedicated and highly regarded horseman from the Hunter North West district, Stephen was known for his integrity, work ethic, and deep lifelong love for thoroughbreds,” Racing NSW said.
“Operating out of Tamworth, he achieved notable success with his stable star, Danza In The Dark, winner of the 2024 Walcha and Quirindi Cups.”
The regulator paid tribute to his impact on the industry, despite operating as a hobby trainer for the past few years.
“His humble approach and sportsmanship earned him wide respect across the industry. Every story he told always included mention of a horse.
“Racing NSW extends its deepest condolences to Stephen’s family and many friends.”
Meyer had six career wins as trainer, all achieved with Danza In The Dark.
