‘Release the Review’ – Racing Reform Group awaits publication of Hazzard recommendations

The Racing Reform Group (RRG), which has been staunch in its belief that the NSW Thoroughbred Racing Act needs an overhaul, has called on the NSW government to release the Hazzard Review.

The Minns Labor government received the report compiled by former NSW health minister Brad Hazzard at the end of July, prompting an Upper House motion demanding Racing Minister David Harris publish the review..

“As we have stated before, the Racing Reform Group NSW put a lot of time and effort into developing a comprehensive and detailed submission to that review. We met with Mr Hazzard twice and had further conversations with him as he finalised his report,” RRG secretary Brian Nutt said.

“We now need the government to release the review and then act upon it. Last week, the Upper House of NSW Parliament moved a motion that demands the Racing Minister, David Harris, release the report within seven days. 

“The only reason the government can refuse to comply with this order, is if they claim the report is under consideration by their Cabinet.”

Wednesday looms as D-day for the government on whether they will heed sections of the racing industry and the Upper House’s motion to release the review, which was instigated following the proposed $5 billion sale of Rosehill was defeated.

“Hundreds of people engaged with Mr Hazzard and his process, and we know there is a strong desire to amend the Act to ensure Racing NSW becomes more accountable,” Nutt said, 

“Changes also need to be made to enhance country racing and the balance of power between the regulator and clubs.

“While we do not know what is in the report, we believe there will be some sensible suggestions to reform Racing NSW for the better.”
