Chance to buy into WA’s tri-code slot racing series

A limited number of coveted slots in Australia’s richest multi-code racing festival have been released, opening the door for new investors to join the 2027 TABtouch Western Trilogy.

Racing WA on Monday called for expressions of interest across all three feature races in the series: the $5 million Quokka at Ascot, the $1.25 million Nullarbor at Gloucester Park and the $600,000 Sandgroper at Cannington.

The opportunity is particularly significant for The Quokka, with the field set to be cut from 13 runners to 12 in 2027, creating a tighter race and increasing the potential return for slot holders sharing in the prizemoney pool.

The Western Trilogy has rapidly become a fixture on the Australian racing calendar since launching in 2023, bringing together thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing across one weekend.

Racing WA Head of Thoroughbred Operations Vinny Meens said the changes were aimed at protecting the long-term strength of The Quokka while attracting new investment to the event.

“Reducing the field size to 12 runners will help strengthen the commercial viability of The Quokka for slot holders and owners, while maintaining the quality and competitiveness that has made the race such a success,” Meens said.

“The Quokka has established itself as one of Australia’s premier sprint races and these changes will help ensure it continues to evolve and grow.”

The 2027 festival will also feature a schedule shake-up, with The Sandgroper moving to Saturday night following The Quokka.

Greyhound Operations Manager Peter Howell said the move would build on Cannington’s established Saturday night racing audience and allow organisers to extend Western Trilogy celebrations into the evening.

Meanwhile, Racing WA Head of Harness Racing and Special Projects Cameron Brown said changes to the wider racing landscape could strengthen the Nullarbor field.

“The Nullarbor has quickly established itself as one of the marquee races on the Australasian harness racing calendar,” Brown said.

Expressions of interest close on September 7, 2026.
