Applications open for next Queensland apprentice jockeys

Racing Queensland has launched expressions of interest for the 2026 Queensland Apprentice Jockey Program, an initiative aimed at developing apprentice jockeys across the state.

Expressions of interest are open and will close on May 21.

Successful applicants will be announced ahead of the program’s commencement at RQ’s induction ceremony on August 5.

Participants will complete a selection process including fitness and medical screening, riding assessments, and foundational industry qualifications.

“Racing Queensland is committed to giving every apprentice the best possible opportunity to succeed, both during their apprenticeship and throughout their broader careers in racing,” RQ acting chief executive Lachlan Murray said.

The 2026 intake follows the announcement of Racing Queensland’s new Racing Institute at the Gold Coast Turf Club.

The institute will house the QAJP and deliver education, mentoring, coaching, and support services including physical conditioning, nutrition, and mental wellbeing.

“The QAJP represents a significant investment in the future of the Queensland racing industry, offering participants access to world-class training facilities, mentoring, and education,” RQ education and workforce development manager Briony Moore said.
