Edwards to exit – RWWA chief set to depart as industry awaits review
As the Western Australian racing industry awaits the outcome of a key independent review, Racing and Wagering Western Australia chief executive Ian Edwards has announced he will step away from the role in November.

Ian Edwards’ six-year tenure in charge of Racing and Wagering Western Australia will come to an end in November.
Edwards was appointed chief executive of the racing regulator and state-owned wagering operator in December 2020 having served in an interim capacity from October 2020 and prior to that as chief financial officer since October 2017.
He has overseen a significant time of change at RWWA, including the launch of the TABtouch Western Trilogy, expanded broadcast and distribution, including the launch of Racing WA TV and major changes at the WA TAB during a challenging time for the wagering industry.
His pending departure was confirmed on Friday, with RWWA having already started planning for a leadership transition.
“Serving as RWWA CEO has been one of the greatest privileges of my career,” Edwards said in a statement.
“I have had the opportunity to work alongside passionate and dedicated people who care deeply about our industry and its future.
“I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and grateful for the support I have received from the Board, our people and industry participants throughout my time as CEO.”
RWWA chair Karen Farley thanked Edwards for his leadership of the Western Australian racing industry over the past six years.
“Ian has led RWWA through a significant period of transformation, growth and innovation,” Farley said.
“Ian has strengthened RWWA from the inside out, helping build a more capable, connected and strategically focused organisation. Through investment in our people, culture, workplaces and long-term planning, he has positioned RWWA for the future.
“On behalf of the board, I thank Ian for his leadership and dedication to racing and wagering in Western Australia. We are grateful for his ongoing commitment to supporting a smooth transition over the coming months.”
Edwards’ decision to step aside comes amid a significant independent review into the financial sustainability and governance of Western Australia’s racing industry, led by former politician David Templeman, Professor Warren Harding and John Nicolaou.
It is understood an interim report was provided to government in June and the final recommendations are potentially due around October.
The review was commissioned amid growing concerns about the financial sustainability of RWWA, which oversees thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing as well as conducting wagering in the state.
According to the WA government, the racing industry in the state contributes more than $1.3 billion to the economy each year and supports thousands of local jobs.
It has been a time of leadership transition already in WA. In June, racing minister Paul Papalia quit politics due to family reasons and was replaced by Don Punch.
