Johnson and Sumbe team up in Australasian expansion
Will Johnson has been appointed the Southern Hemisphere Bloodstock and Racing Manager for Sumbe and its owner Nurlan Bizakov.
Bizakov and Sumbe first made their presence felt in Australia through 2024 Golden Eagle runner-up Lazzat, and after making investments through the yearling market, recent announced star stallion Charyn will begin shuttle duties in 2026 to Cambridge Stud.
Johnson’s appointment is latest step in those Australasian ambitions.
“I am delighted to announce and to welcome Will to the Sumbe team. We previously worked together during his time as assistant to Roger Varian, and we have remained in contact ever since. I very much look forward to a successful and fruitful collaboration,” Bizakov said.
Johnson first met the Kazah billionaire, who has interests through farms Montfort and Preaux, Mezeray and Hesmonds Stud which have combined to become Sumbe, while the Australai was working with Roger Varian.
“To have Nurlan and his Sumbe operation expand their footprint to Australia and New Zealand is an endorsement for our industry. I look forward to working with Nurlan, Tony Fry and his team to grow their commercial presence in the southern hemisphere.”
