Rothfire retires
Robert Heathcote has called time on the nine-year-old’s 47-start career, which continued through a serious sesamoid injury and a six-year gap between Group 1 wins.
Rothfire has been retired after Sunday’s Manikato Stakes at Caulfield, ending a 47-start career with two Group 1 wins and $5.83 million in prize money.
Trainer Robert Heathcote confirmed the decision on Monday after the nine-year-old finished well back in the 1200-metre race. Rothfire won 12 races, with his Group 1 victories coming six years apart.
His first Group 1 came in the 2020 JJ Atkins at Eagle Farm, when he was two. Later that year, Rothfire fractured a sesamoid in the Golden Rose at Rosehill, ruling him out of The Everest.
Rothfire returned to win the Doomben 10,000 over 1200 metres on May 16 this year as a $61 chance. He was eight, and 2,170 days had passed since his JJ Atkins victory.
