Smith back in the saddle after serving five-year ban
Jockey Daniel Jack Smith, formerly known as Terry Treichel, has been relicensed by Racing NSW after serving an extended ban for a string of betting offences in the Northern Territory.
Smith was disqualified for a total of five years after pleading guilty to 32 offences, including 30 betting-related charges and two false declaration charges.
Smith, who changed his name by deed poll after relocating from NSW to the Northern Territory in 2019, continued riding as Terry Treichel but used his new legal name to operate betting accounts.
He admitted placing 27 bets on races in which he was riding between July 2019 and December 2020, as well as 168 bets on other races through a Sportsbet account and additional bets through Neds and PointsBet.
Smith received a five-year disqualification for the betting offences and a concurrent three-year disqualification for the false declarations. The ban was backdated to December 18, 2020, when his licence was suspended. His penalty expired on December 18 last year, with Racing NSW disclosing on its website on Thursday that it had relicensed the jockey.
