Ka Ying Rising settles in with Hayes seeing limited Everest threats

David Hayes believes Ka Ying Rising has returned to Sydney in better shape than last year as the champion begins his final preparations for another Everest assault.

The gelding’s arrival on Monday was followed by his first look at Canterbury on Tuesday, with Hayes reporting normal vital signs, a strong appetite and a smoother trip than his 2025 campaign.

Ka Ying Rising lost 5kg during the journey but left Hong Kong 7kg heavier than at any previous overseas departure, while his 1:06.10 course-record win provided the hard race Hayes wanted into the Everest.

Hayes said he had yet to see a rival emerge who caused him significant concern, although he identified Godolphin mare Tempted and Joliestar as the horses he respected most.

He has deliberately strengthened Ka Ying Rising’s preparation after fitness became a talking point before last year’s Everest, when he was beaten in his Randwick trial 10 days before the race.

Hayes now rates his horse at least 10 per cent better than last year, with Ka Ying Rising the $1.35 TAB favourite and Ninja the only other confirmed runner just over three weeks from the race.

Ka Ying Rising will contest a Randwick barrier trial on October 6.
