Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) has appointed Chief Wagering Officer Mike Saunders as interim chief executive until July 31 next year, giving him responsibility for the organisation during a state government review of the industry.

Saunders will begin next week, while outgoing chief executive Ian Edwards will remain at RWWA until November 13. The overlap is intended to provide a structured handover after Edwards decided to step down last month.

The RWWA Board unanimously endorsed Saunders, who has more than 25 years of experience across racing and wagering and is already a member of its executive team.

He has worked at RWWA since December 2014, managing the RWWA wagering division.

“The Board has confidence in Mike’s leadership and his ability to guide RWWA through the opportunities and challenges ahead,” RWWA Board Chair Karen Farley SC said.

“Mike has been a key member of RWWA’s Executive Team and brings more than 25 years’ experience across both racing and wagering. His experience, leadership and deep understanding of our organisation make him the right person to lead RWWA through its next chapter.”

Saunders currently manages RWWA’s wagering division, which includes the TABtouch digital platform and Western Australia’s retail wagering network. His portfolio covers wagering profit and loss and responsible wagering.

His appointment places the executive responsible for RWWA’s wagering operations at the head of an organisation that administers racing in Western Australia across the thoroughbred, harness and greyhound codes while operating the state’s TAB business.

Saunders said the industry generated economic activity and supported thousands of jobs across the state.

“Western Australian racing plays a vital role across the State, generating significant economic activity, supporting thousands of jobs and connecting communities,” he said.

“I look forward to leading RWWA as we continue working with industry participants, race clubs, government and stakeholders to support a long-term sustainable future for racing in Western Australia.”

Edwards became chief executive in December 2020 after serving in the role on an interim basis from October that year. His time at RWWA began in October 2017, when he became chief financial officer.

Farley thanked Edwards for his leadership and continued involvement during the handover.

“Ian leaves behind a strong legacy, and the Board is grateful for his leadership and dedication over the past six years,” she said.

“The Board thanks Ian for his leadership and his ongoing support as we work through this transition.”

Edwards has been appointed as chief financial officer for energy retailer Synergy and will assume that role in November.

The appointment announcement did not set out the process or timetable for selecting a permanent chief executive at RWWA.

Saunders will take charge while an independent Western Australian review examines racing’s financial sustainability and governance. The panel was expected to complete its work by the end of 2026, with $1.03 million allocated in the 2026/27 State Budget for services supporting its examination of RWWA’s finances and administration.
