Baker calls time for Group 1 hero Arapaho
Dual Group 1-winning stayer Arapaho has been retired.
The French-bred winner of both the Tancred Stakes and the Sydney Cup, was a 10-time victor on the track and earned over $4.3 million for his connections headed by trainer Bjorn Baker and Carl Holt, is whose blue and red colours he raced.
“He has also been something of a favourite behind the scenes. Known as our stable’s giant Labrador, he is kind-natured, unassuming and a real presence in the barn, so he will be missed!,” Baker said.
“The decision to retire him has been made with his best interests firmly in mind. He is feeling a little wear and tear on his joints, and at 9 years old, it’s the right call to step him away from racing rather than take any risk.”
The son of Lope De Vega was purchased for 140,000 euros at Arqana in 2020 and he won the Canberra and Grafton Cup before an upset victory in the 2023 Tancred Stakes for jockey Rachel King.
He also won the 2024 Sandown Classic and then claimed the 2025 Sydney Cup.
“We are very grateful to his ownership group for their support throughout his career, and to everyone who has played a role in his journey,” Baker said.
“Arapaho will now enjoy a well-earned retirement with Rachel King and Luke Hilton, where we know he will be loved and cared for in the next chapter of his life.”
