SA election a betting non-event with Malinauskas expected to increase majority
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas is the shortest-priced political favourite in Australian history heading into Saturday’s state election.
Malinauskas’ Labor Party is $1.01 to retain power with most bookmakers, while the Liberal Party, led by Ashton Hurn, is $15, with $67 for any other party.
The lopsided market has stifled investment from punters.
Labor holds 29 of the 47 seats in the House Of Assembly, with Liberal holding onto just 13 and four independents, with one seat vacant. Labor is expected to increase its majority on Saturday.
Malinauskas assumed the Premiership in March 2022 when Liberal, led by Steven Marshall, lost the last election.
While the result looks a foregone conclusion, there will be substantial interest in the performance of One Nation, as the Liberal Party struggles to hold onto its base.
